Migrating an organization&#8217;s cryptographic infrastructure is a slow, multi-year process, which means the planning needs to start well before quantum computers pose an immediate threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The core issue is that encryption underpins far more of an organization&#8217;s technology stack than most people realize \u2014 not just obvious things like VPNs and encrypted databases, but also digital signatures, certificate infrastructure, secure software update mechanisms, and countless embedded systems. Replacing the cryptographic algorithms at the heart of all of that requires touching software, hardware, and third-party vendor relationships across the entire environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Standards bodies have already finalized quantum-resistant algorithms, so the technical foundation for migration exists. What remains is the practical work: inventorying where and how cryptography is currently used across an organization&#8217;s systems, prioritizing which systems protect the most sensitive or longest-lived data, and planning a phased migration that doesn&#8217;t disrupt operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The &#8220;harvest now, decrypt later&#8221; threat adds urgency for a specific category of organizations \u2014 those holding data that needs to remain confidential for many years, such as healthcare, government, defense, and financial services.
