The performance benefits are real: lower latency, reduced bandwidth costs, and the ability to process data locally when connectivity is unreliable. But those benefits come with a meaningfully larger attack surface.

Centralized architectures, whatever their downsides, have one security advantage: a smaller number of well-defended locations to protect. Edge computing inverts that model, distributing sensitive processing and data storage across potentially thousands of physical locations and devices, many of which have far weaker physical security than a data center and limited on-site IT staff to monitor them.

Many edge devices also run with constrained computing resources, which can limit the security software that can realistically run on them. A lightweight IoT sensor or edge gateway often can’t support the same endpoint protection tools as a full server, leaving gaps that attackers have learned to exploit.

Patch management becomes considerably harder at scale, too. Updating security patches across thousands of distributed edge devices, some in remote or hard-to-access locations, is logistically far more complex than patching centralized servers, and unpatched edge devices are a common entry point for attackers.

Organizations adopting edge architectures need a security strategy built for distribution from the start: strong device identity and authentication for every edge node, network segmentation so a compromised edge device can’t easily reach core systems, and automated patch management designed for intermittent connectivity. Treating edge security as an extension of existing data center practices, rather than a distinct discipline, tends to leave significant gaps.

Edge computing pushes data processing and storage closer to where data is generated — factory…

[10

post-151","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-enterprise-technology
["GET
